I’m Dr. Peter Karth, MD, MBA, FASRS, FACS, a retina specialist based in Oregon, with a focus is on delivering patient-centered retina care for all retinal conditions, locally, in Eugene, Salem, Roseburg, and the Oregon Coast.

I wote this to help Oregonians and patients everywhere fully understand what retina speciality care is and means.

Retina Specialists are medical doctor who have specialized in ophthalmology and further expanded thier skills in vitreoretinal medicine and surgery.

Understanding the Retina and Its Disorders

The retina is a vital part of the eye, responsible for converting light into neural signals that the brain interprets as vision. Disorders of the retina, ranging from macular degeneration and diabetic eye diseases to vitreous opacties (sometimes known as floaters) retinal detachments, can severely impact this process, leading to partial or complete vision loss. As a retina specialist, my goal is to diagnose and treat these conditions effectively, offering hope and improvement to those affected.

The Anatomy and Function of the Retina

The retina’s complex structure includes layers of nerve cells that process light and color, enabling us to see. The central part of the retina, known as the macula, is critical for sharp, detailed vision. Diseases affecting the retina can disrupt these processes, highlighting the importance of specialized care in diagnosing and treating retinal conditions.

Common Retinal Conditions: From Diabetic Retinopathy to Retinal Detachments

Common retinal conditions such as wet macular degeneration, dry macular degeneration and geographic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and vein occlusions are some of the most common retina specialists treat, usually in the office with medine.   Surgical issues such as epiretinal membranes/macular puckers, macular holes, and retinal detachments are among the most common surgical conditions I treat. Treatments, including laser and surgery, for symptomatic vitreous opacities (floaters) is another way I can help my patients improve their vision.   My practice in Oregon is equipped to handle these and other retinal diseases, providing comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs.

What to Expect When Visiting Your Retina Specialist

When you visit one of my office in Oregon for a retinal exam, you can expect a thorough assessment using advanced diagnostic tools, at every location. This allows for accurate diagnosis and the formulation of a personalized treatment plan, created for each patient individually.  Uniquely, My team and I are committed to ensuring that each patient feels informed and supported throughout their care journey.

The Initial Assessment: Comprehensive Eye Examination Procedures

The first step in your visit will be a comprehensive eye examination, which may (or may not) include dilation of the pupils to allow a detailed view of the retina and its structures. This initial assessment is crucial for identifying any underlying conditions that may require further investigation or treatment.  We always do a focused and thorough exam.

Advanced Diagnostic Tools and Imaging Techniques Used

Diagnostic tools such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, electroretinagram, autofluorecence, fundud photos, and other imaging types are vital in diagnosing and monitoring retinal conditions. These advanced imaging techniques allow for detailed visualization of the retina, enabling precise identification of issues such as retinal detachment and guiding effective treatment strategies.

The Spectrum of Treatment Options for Retinal Diseases

Treatment options for retinal diseases range from medical management using a wide range of medications to surgical interventions such as laser therapy and vitrectomy. The choice of treatment depends on the specific condition and its severity. My practice is dedicated to offering the latest advancements in retinal care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients in Oregon, locally.

The Role of Ongoing Management in Chronic Conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy

Managing chronic conditions such as macular degeneration, geographic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema often requires ongoing care to monitor the eye’s health and prevent further damage. This may include regular eye exams, adjustments in treatment, and coordination with other healthcare providers to manage underlying conditions like blood pressure and blood sugar. My practice in Oregon emphasizes comprehensive care and patient education to support long-term eye health for each of my patients.

Factors to Consider: Training, Experience, Specialization, and Patient Reviews

When choosing a retina specialist, here are factors you need to consider:

  1. Retina training: retina specialists get their retina training in a fellowship, after medical school and after ophthalmology residency.  A fellowship is simply additional training after residency.
    1. Two-year fellowship:  Two years of retina specialist training is critical.   Short changing this critical training is not a good sign.   Look for a retina specialist who has had a two-year retina fellowship.  (I underwent a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at Stanford University)
    2. AUPO Accredidated Retina Fellowship:  The AUPO (Association of University Professor in Ophthalmology) the governing and certifying body in retina fellowships give accreditation to qualifying retina fellowships.  Be sure your retina doctor attended a AUPO Acredited retina fellowship.  (I underwent a AUPO accredited retina fellowship at Stanford University).
    3. USA based fellowship:  There are a few Canadian fellowships that past muster, but some that do not.  These USA+ based fellowships teach the gold standard of adavanced retinal care.   Be sure your retina doctor attended a USA based fellowship.  (I underwent a USA based retina fellowship at Stanford University.)
    4. Well Rocognized Institution for Retina Fellowship:  Even considering the above, be sure your retina doctor when to a well-recognized instituion for reitna fellowship.  In retina fellowships, name recognition matters.   Be sure your retina doctor attended a well-know and recognized institution for their retina fellowship.  (I underwent a retina fellowship at Stanford University).
    5. Look for credentials: most medical doctors have an MD or OD, which is a great first step.   Next, other advanced traning degrees are important.  Also, becoming highly respected in key organizations is an important sign.    For instance, the American College of Surgeons requires a year long application process, interviews, case log review, peer references, medical license review, and other rigorus steps to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgery and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

My practice in Oregon prides itself on these solid foundation in all of these areas.  These factors, combined with our many positive patient reviews, clearly reflect our commitment to excellence in retina care.
